The Council said in a statement it was necessary to suspend the prayer sessions in mosques to tame the spread of the disease.

“We strongly recommend all ALL masjids to suspend the weekly Friday Jummah prayer effective immediately, including Friday March 13, 2020 until further notice,” the statement read in part.

The Council also said it had agreed to form a taskforce comprising of imams in Canada, heath professionals and other key stakeholders ‘to help provide guidance going forward.’

The measures follow report that Sophie Trudeau, the wife of Canada’s Prime Minister had tested
positive for virus.

The office of the Prime Minister said in a statement the PM was now on self-isolation.

“The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms. As a precautionary measure and
following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days,” the
office said.
